| [2006 May 1] The thing about the illos in pages 1-4 is that they were drawn manually. I was experiencing living situations similar to the Iggy at the time I drew them, and there were Iggy is sketching, I could just as easily have been me sketching by candle-light, late in the summer when the temperature was still 90 degrees, but tolerable compared to the day. It was kinda like a fictional diary paralleling my experiences last summer. | |

| [2006 May 1] That was a memorable summer. We had just moved out camper onto the property and the electricity, water, and sewage wasn't connected yet. Until the water and sewage was dealt with we couldn't get the electricity connected --that's according to the city. So. Rather than pay some overpriced jerk to intall all that we did it ourselves. We learned why the overpriced jerks were overpriced jerks that summer. Just under the easy-to-dig soil is a layer of hard clay which we had to hack our way through, which took a few weeks.
On the other hand, I did become quite well-acquainted with the local library, which I camped-out in for a few hours every day. And that's really the only two things I accomplished that summer: digging trenches and reading. | |

[Transcript] - I was far from starvation myself, but I'd lost more than 70 pounds in less than three months. I started spending lunch breaks in my car. It was sickening to be around people constantly stuffing their faces in front of me. Lunch, break, after work; I couldn't figure out where the got the money for all of that food they had.
Things got worse. After a bad winter, I couldn't pay the light bill, so my utilities were shut off. This was in April. It took me six months to get my bills caught up enought to reinstate my utilities. I was borrowing water from the bathroom at work, keeping my situation as inconspicuous as possible so I wouldn't get thrown out of my apartment.
Summer was difficult. There was drought, and 100 degree days were persistent. I occasionally got spells of vomiting. I lit the place with cheap candles I'd gotten from the dollar store. One evening while I was sketching, I got some weird revelations from the 'Santo Nino De Atocha' candle. |
