| [2006 April 29] I think our mutual view on college as we experienced it was everything we were supposed to be trained in could have been learned outside of school with the same or better results. If we were trained in air-conditioning and automotive repair that'd probably have been a different story. Then again, most of our respective instructors weren't capable of giving the training our grants were supposedly paying for and as Mel experienced, they offered her no support after her graduation. I was dejected enough to drop out.
I wanted to learn hard-core computer programming and figured electronics could be a valuable way of getting there, but after two quarters the magic was gone and I just couldn't keep up the fib. I switched over to CAD, primarily to be closer to Mel, but after one quarter that was enough for me. I'm not a college boy --I always learned better by studying on my own. Mel excelled in that course, but thanks to ITT not honoring the job placement aid she couldn't pay the remaining bill and recieve an actual piece of paper from them.
Traditional college teaches you a lot of things you'll never use and for more money than we spent combined. ITT is a technical cram college designed to get you into the industry as soon as possible. Mel eventually did get into the construction industry, but it took longer than it should have. I eventually learned how to program, but again it took a lot longer than it should have. Granted, the extra time has taught us a lot, but to us the college experience was a bit disappointing.

| [2006 May 1] There's another side to the college thing, too. I do have several credits of art education outside of Tech College. I quit that becuase I found it to be more worthless than anything I've ever encountered. Art Education is so political these days you might was well be throwing money to some big shot celebrity creator just to get an endorsement. Otherwise, getting a degree in art is embarrasing and pointless. Hence, I made Iggy the one who bothered to stay and get a degree in fine art. Interestingly, I have more than once had run-ins with people who acted like they were interested in my art. Once it was discovered that my degree was in something else, or that I wasn't an 'already successful' artisan they lost interest.
The best thing about not having status quo is that I can make fun of the cliquesters and scenesters of the cult who are poised to surpress their right to free speech, as it will impair their career prospects. He he. Evil is fun... and I am Satan.

[Transcript] - Back to Doug:
After his story I was beginning to sober up. It was morning, our papers had been processed. I got away with no charges at all and he got a misdemeanor. We weren't incarcerated, just processed, then given the usual lecture and let go.
"Just don't pay the damn loans! According to you your credit is already fucked, so why bother? They can't extort you if you're dead, you know!"
"They threaten to garnish for each loan individually if I don't pay."
"Fucking fear tactics. They're too interested in profit to hire leg-breakers. What did you go to school for anyway?"
"Nothing useful."
"You know, you could just move in with me. That'd help both of us out with the money."
"You're not some sort of faggot, are you?"
"No, just insane."
"Donno. I'm kinda used to being alone."
"Think about it. Anything's better than your current sit."
He took me up on the offer. We were roommates for about two and half years. He kept the house better than any of the women I ever dated. He was one of the biggest tightwads I'd ever met. He wasn't social, never volunteered any information about himself, and as far as I could tell, he didn't really have any friends. I kinda thought he had no family either.
He was a total blank from what I could tell, but he seemed to have enough of something to imply he had a past. I decided to get him to get out more while we were roommates.
The one thing I could never figure out about him... I've never met another human being who was ashamed of being smart. |
